Character: Mimi Houllier von Schwarzlang
Series: Atelier Totori - The Adventurer of Arland
Age: 18
History:
Mimi is the only daughter of the Schwarzlang parents, and born in the wealthier part of the nation of Arland. It isn't clear what her father did for a living, but she grew up spending a lot of her time with her sickly mother, and she herself was rather frail which made her the subject of ridicule and teasing by other kids her age for much of her childhood.
Around the age of five, when she had come crying for support, her mother decided to teach her about bravery and pride- At the time Mimi was unable to understand what being an aristocrat meant and so was told that if she felt like she was going to cry, to instead say that she 'is the daughter of a Schwarzlang'. Taking her mothers word to heart, she gradually became brave, stronger-willed and proud , and with it her health also became strong.
Her mother passed on a few years after, and not longer still did Mimi not only come to understand what being an aristocrat meant in it's basic definition, she had also come to realize that it was merely a title that could be bought in this age in Arland.
Determined not to make her mother's words a lie, she from that moment on declared that she would make her family's name mean something by becoming the world's greatest Adventurer; surpassing the feats of Gisela Helmold, who was the most renowned Adventurer at that time, was one of her obstacles.
(This nation has a job called "adventurers." It all happened before Arland became a republic. People wanted to explore, adventure, or develop the frontier. The knights of Arland were weak, so the citizens joined them and helped out. It happened gradually, but that system was later institutionalized. Adventuring is now a real job. My mother was one of those adventurers. I hear she's actually famous, too, but we haven't heard from her in years. My father and sister both think she's already... but I don't think so. - Description of Adventuring as told by Totori from the instruction manual.)
Adventurers are rewarded money for fulfilling city requests and awarded 'points' for accomplishing various tasks. Once a specific number of points are obtained the adventurer is promoted to a higher rank and at the highest rank, are awarded a license that does not need to be renewed yearly.
Mimi trained with an halberd as well as developed her own special technique. Once she was fourteen, traveled to the Adventurer's Guild to gain her license to become an official, but low-ranked, Adventurer. It was here where she met Totori, whom she declared her first rival when the girl managed to become an Adventurer when she could not (due to her attitude). Eventually she did get her way, then proceeded to go out of her way to track down Totori and show off her accomplishment as well as declare her interest in hiring the alchemist as she knew that there are only three known in the Arland, and possibly the world.
While Mimi has proven herself to be stubborn and difficult to work with on numerous occasions; over time and numerous adventures together the two had become friends and worked together to discover the fate of Totori's mother; the same person whose legacy Mimi is determined to surpass.
Before arriving at Dragon Haven, Mimi was returning home overseas with Totori after assisting her in defeating a particularly powerful demon that freed the city it periodically haunted from it's terrorizing. She had, at this point, discovered the fate of Totori's mother and shared her own story, as well as defeated the shipwrecking creature of the sea that allegedly defeated Gisela called Flauschtraut. She's also several points away from achieving the highest rank of Adventurer and obtaining her permanent license.
Canon Point: The defeat of Evil Face
Personality:
General Temperament: Mimi is a girl whose intense pride and eloquence gives a constant reminder that she is someone of importance. She's quick to talk down to those she believes inferior in social status and extremely polite to those whom she considers her equal or above. She comes off as snooty, difficult but very strong-willed, mostly because her pride will not allow her to show any sign of weakness.
Stubborn: There are numerous times where Mimi will find herself in the wrong due to her short temper and will often resort to any means to either twist her wrongs into being right or change the subject completely should she realize her wrong-doing. It's incredibly difficult to get her to apologize. After arguments she tends to storm away and once she's cooled off she'll 'retcon' any sort of argument by denying it happened.
For example when Totori points out that Mimi speaks politely to her older sister yet uncivil to herself; she immediately denies having done that.
Headstrong: The most important things to Mimi is her family name and nobility; and she is determined to make everyone recognize it by doing great things and will not hesitate to meet a difficult challenge head-on. She has no idea what she will do once she accomplishes that goal, but has centered her life around it anyway.
Proud/Pride: Mimi has it in her head that a legendary aristocrat must show no signs of weakness. They must appear strong at all times, and be recognized as great and wise. This goes back to her stubbornness; as she doesn't, at first, allow herself to mingle among those of the lower class unless she feels she has something to prove. This, of course, doesn't gain her many friends, but she is convinced that she doesn't need friendship, just respect. She has been somewhat more open about friendship upon befriending Totori, whom is pretty much the only person she will open up to at this point in time.
Manners: Mimi flaunts her superiority and is often stand-offish to those she considers her lessors, mostly because she feels she has to beat the reminder into their heads until they treat her properly. This isn't as much the case with those equal to her on the social ladder; she's very eloquent, can speak gently and sometimes even uses longer words when addressing those types or is before an audience. It's arguable that she acts this way as sort of an amalgam of her father and her mother's behavior; her mother gentle, and father gruff.
Seeker of Knowledge: Mimi does a lot of reading; she understands the importance of knowing what opponent she's going to be up against, whom people of importance are, or what situations she'll be getting into but with an aspect of Adventuring being going into unknown terrain, she finds herself having to think on her feet; which she also is very capable of doing. She wants every edge she can obtain on her journey to fame.
Lonely: Mimi is a rather lonely person; she doesn't have many friends and she's left her only parent to go on her journey. She doesn't see the advantages of having someone she's close to by her side, and seems to ignore that her refusal to tell anyone about her problems is part of the issue of her outbursts and short temper. Even though she's opened up to Totori she still has issues trying to lower her guard around the girl.
Easily Riled: Mimi gets especially angry when someone embarrasses her. Poor Totori is often the enabler of her fury; for example when she managed to surpass Mimi in Adventure Rank, causing the aristocrat to get embarrassed and the argument the followed eventually led to Mimi breaking off their alliance until she finally caught up with her.
Commanding: Mimi is convinced because she is great she must always have her way; it's more likely that she will demand she get something rather than ask politely, depending on the company she is addressing; though sometimes even when she's being polite she'll come off as stand-offish.
Nitpicky: Most often she demands for the best that she can afford, because she aims to be a legend- Nothing less than the best will do. This usually applies to anything that has a known 'high class' section, such as pavilions and seating arrangements; but also for weaponry and armor.
Relationship with Totori: Upon discovering Totori is an alchemist (and there were only three known alchemists at the time), Mimi tried to hire her services to join her on her quest to spreading the family name. Totori refused, and since Mimi could not accept that and was determined to have a rare alchemist in her ranks, Mimi instead offered her services to the alchemist.
She was, at first, extremely put off by Totori's meek and bubble-headed behavior, and spent a lot of time arguing with her or being extremely jealous of the alchemists loving family. Once she learned the common point that Totori also lost her mother at a young age, she started to warm up to the girl but it was a while still before she revealed her own past to the other. Now she sees Totori as a close friend, and tries to be less pushy around her.
Skills and Abilities:
Mimi is a fighter talented with the halberd and mastered the weapon at a young age. Her fighting style mostly utilizes her speed, allowing her to strike multiple times in a short amount of time or striking two opponents with the same strike.
Under times of stress she is capable of unleashing her ultimate attack, wielding the weapon and striking at blinding speeds, resulting in striking her opponent multiple times in the span of seconds.
Her strong will makes her more resistant, though not impervious, to ailments than a normal human.
First Person Sample:
[A teenage girl appears upon the network screen, and there's just something about her that gives a regal air about her. She smiles as she nods her head.]
Good afternoon, everyone, my name is Mimi Houllier Von Schawarzlang, heir of the Schawrzlang name and wielder of the fabled weapon 'Rhein Scheiden'. As you may be able to tell, I am an aristocrat and for those whom do not know what the words means, the simplest way to put it is that I have been destined from birth to be great.
[She clears her throat, and her eyes narrow, her expression becoming more serious.]
Now, with the formalities out of the way, I would like to get down to business. It would appear that my bracelet has been stolen, and the last it was in my possession, I was in the town of Glie. Now, I understand the feeling of recognizing it's value and keeping it for yourself or maybe even selling it for a considerable amount of money, but that bracelet is mine and I demand it be returned to me!
[And then it grows increasingly sower and her voice raises.]
If it is returned to me within the next two hours then I shall accept it with no questions asked.
However.. If it is not in my hands then I will find you and make certain that you are punished to the fullest extent of-- Hmn?
[Mimi glances off to the side as if she's being told something, something along the lines of it having been found under the bed. Her eyes go wide, her cheeks burn a bright red, and she stays quiet for at least fifteen seconds. Finally, with grit teeth she closes one eye.]
Ahem. N- Never mind.
[And ends the feed.]
Third Person Sample:
Within the Hotel, a certain aristocrat paces back and forth within her room; and has been doing so for the last fifteen minutes. The lavish decorations nor the scent of the sea coming through her open window did much to relieve her tense mood.
"I admit, this.. Is a far more troublesome situation than I could have ever expected.." Mimi murmurs aloud, her arms crossed and eyes closed. She often found it easier to find solutions to her problems when she talked to herself, but since it is a bit of an embarrassing habit, she made extra certain she's alone.
She raises a hand to her chin, then proceeds to pace even quicker, "I still possess my license; but now that I am nowhere near the Adventurer's Guild, it doesn't look like the chances of me of gaining a permanent one is good.. Not to mention once this one expires I will really be in trouble.. An adventurer with an expired license; I'll surely be a laughing stock! I must think of a solution. There just has to be one!"
Her pacing quickens as she grows more worried, "No, as a Schwarzlang heir, I mustn't panic. I must gather more information, access the facts, and only then will the solution become obvious to me! Let us start with the date then!"
Mimi rushes to the left side of the room where her calendar resides, though upon looking at it she comes to realize that the dates don't match up with the calendars back in Arland. What in the world could this possibly mean for her then? "It seems I do not have a choice.. I.. I.." Mimi cringed. "I may have to resort to the Network for assistance.. Rrgh. Why is there never a wise elder when you need one?"
